August is here and depending where you are in the world, it’s probably very hot and you just can’t wait for some cooler fall weather (anyone else, or just me?) This has led me to start thinking about how to organize the different aspects of life to create balance and I’ve created a system to help us do just that.
As my kids gear to go back to school and we get some sense of normalcy back in our routines, the unfinished to do lists keep nagging at me. Except that when I try to organize it all on paper, I struggle to form coherent thoughts and my mind goes blank.
Many of you may be familiar with the Wheel of Life, which allows you to rate different categories to create balance. When one or more of these categories are low, we tend to feel lost or just not as great as we could be. If you encounter an area that is lower than others, then this is the area that you should focus on.
For many people, the idea of organizing their lives is a big pill to swallow and can seem too daunting of a task to even start. For me, working towards crossing of these different to do’s help me feel accomplished and on track to reach my goals.
I like to use the categories in the Wheel of Life to create my pending to do’s so that I can make sure that the things I’m working towards will eventually create a balance in my day to day.
How to Use This System to Organize Your Life
The main goal is to be as specific as possible for each category and use the blank lists to create other categories that are important to your individual life.
Health
For the Health category, I detail the different health items that I want to accomplish. For example, eating 100g of protein per day, I detail the specific workout program that I plan on doing, and I list the doctor appointments that I need to schedule.
Career
Under career I list any education or certifications that I plan on taking to help with work and detail any career plans on here. One of my goals is to publish 100 YT videos by end of this year. Knowing that I have this goal, I can prepare by seeing how many videos I would need and then breaking that down by month and week.
Finance
Finance for me includes analyzing our expenses and creating a simple budget. I also includes meal planning on here as this is my most overspent budget. I also include investment and savings automation. If you haven’t read my article on how to micro invest you can read that here.
Use each category to organize any tasks that are lingering and break them down into smaller tasks.
Use the blank spaces to create categories that are important for your unique situation. For me, I am using a category for decluttering, another category for shopping so that I have the things I need to buy all in one place.
Category Ideas
| List of meals your family loves | Home Improvement Projects |
| Items to buy from different stores (Dollar Tree, Target, etc.) | Home Maintenance Projects |
| Family Activities | Decluttering Projects |
How to Take Action
Once you’ve identified the different tasks under each category, now you need to schedule them in your planner. It’s not enough to just create the to do’s if you don’t give it a home in your day to day planner.
If you are a parent, I recommend adding holidays, vacation, teacher work days or anything else that affects your child’s school attendance. Schedule any holidays that you may have as well. This allows you to plan vacations, doctor’s appointments and other activities without disrupting yours or your kid’s schedules.
It’s always a good idea to add in when in the week you plan on handling these tasks so you can make sure everything gets done.
I have a free guide on how to take control of your week, and you can check that out here.
